Costco reports Q3 sales fall
Warehouse club Costco reported that net sales declined 5% to USD15.48 billion during the third quarter of 2009. Carrefour reports Q1 sales fall
French retailer Carrefour has reported that gross sales for Q1 reached EUR22.7 billion (USD30.51 billion), a decrease of 1.4% at constant exchange rates compared to the previous year. Q1 sales for its French hypermarkets declined by 5.4% on a like-for-like basis including petrol. Excluding petrol, like-for-like sales were down 2.5%. M&S sales fall but outperform expectations
Marks & Spencer has reported like-for-like sales fell 4.2 per cent in its fourth quarter, but the retailer's performance was better than feared.
In the 13 weeks to March 28 like-for-like sales in its food division fell 3.7 per cent and M&S said that this improved performance had been buoyed by better ranges and offers such as its Dine In deals.

Retail sales and employment fall in February
More than half of retailers reported lower sales in the year to early February and retail job cuts rose to a record rate in the same period, according to the CBI's latest Distributive Trades Survey.
In the survey, conducted between January 27 and February 11, 52 per cent of responding retailers said their sales were down, while 27 per cent reported sales were up.
